Entering the Rabbit Hole-------November 12th 2017

 Talk about performance anxiety! We just want to revolutionize the entire way we do high school starting at Year 9.

 So it begins.....

 Why? Because teachers know this education paradigm is %$#@!!!!. We can not keep doing the same thing and expect to see the change we want. It is past time to change.

 What: 21st Century Fluencies from  GDC web. After i stumbled across Lee Watanabe Crockett's   BEYOND STEM  presentation to teachers at a 2017 Perth conference, I knew we had a winner.

 When: November 6th we launched the  BIG 3 PD  with a fun collaboration  we three English leaders  introduced 
(1) Growth Mindset,  
(2) Collaboration and  
(3) Mindful assessment practice shifts to our English department.

 Utilizing Wednesdays periods 1&2  to build teacher capacity for 5 weeks.

The vision  to equip teachers of juniors (Years 9&10) to change the way we
  • think (growth mindset), 
  • teach (collaboratively &  MLE) and 
  • assess (mindful self and peer rather than teacher driven) so that all students can achieve success as they are and be measured by their learning progress, rather than against their peers. The  GDC  21st Century learning fluencies will undergird and scaffold this change.

My specific challenge :Learning Blogs will be my modus operandi for Year 9  English class

November 28th 2017 Lots of Department PLD which has been incredibly stimulating. The best PLD. I have experienced because we have collaborated to co construct presentations to English teaching peers and gained so much from the time spent together. A lot of honesty and breaking down of competitiveness. 21st century learning fluencies and Global Digital citizen website have been instrumental in guiding this journey beyond measure. Best part of it was how i experienced that three heads are far better than one.  The synergy of working collaboratively increased the value of the product profoundly. Once you collaborate you never want to plan alone again. It takes the loneliness and druggery out of teaching and ignites  waning enthuzaism for the profession we can love to hate when we are worn out.

entering the dark part of the rabbit hole

After a great holiday in Australia, it is time move into the unknown rabbit hole of teaching 21st Century Fluencies in High School English classes. It is going to be an interesting year as we are changing a lot of curriculum organisation and content in English.  I am teaching Year 9 for the first time in a while. Focus is vital literacy skills in English, using 21st century fluencies as the modus operandi. Learning will be more relevant to the world our students are inheriting. Start the year with a focus on a big three and a big four : B3 =Growth mindset, collaboration and mindful assessment underpin how we teach.  B4 = Critical thinking, reading, speaking and writing. DATA -Assessing reading and writing skills via diagnostic Asttle tests in February & November 2018 is  is  important.This will document if the curriculum changes raise the reading and writing curriculum levels of Year 10 students.  READING In class I will provide 1/5 of...
